Fictional Icons

Sometimes I invest so much emotion into a character that I forget they are just fictional.  So much so that the reason I like or dislike the person playing them is based on the character they play instead of who they really are. I guess that ability to play a character so well is what makes them a great actress or actor.

Here are the fictional icons I fell in love with and wish that I had access to their closets.

1.      Scarlett O’Hara
I think the first time I saw “Gone with the Wind” I was about 9 or 10 years old. I remember being in such awe at everything Scarlett wore, from her sweet looking white dress in the opening scene to her elegant red dress she wore to Ashley’s birthday party.  And also in the closing scene in her black dress as Rhett rode away in his horse and buggy. I love that even at the end of the civil war, when everyone was in rags and working themselves to the bone, she had the means to look gorgeous, taking her mother’s green velvet curtains and turning them into a fashion masterpiece along with a matching purse and hat. If you have never seen “Gone with the Wind” you need to check it out.

2.     Blair Waldorf
I recently just got into Gossip Girl about a year ago and have loved just about every outfit Blair has ever worn; so much so that I had to go out and buy every pair of colored tights I could get my hands on! In her days at Constance, she was always able to add flair to her school uniform.  Every time she went out to enjoy the nightlife on the Upper East Side, she looked young and trendy.  And while she was out at galas, fundraisers and parties hobnobbing with New York City’s rich and famous she always managed to look simply elegant.

      3.   Carrie Bradshaw
She is New York fashion. She manages to tie in couture pieces with simple everyday looks.  She is great at adapting her fashion to the culture she lives in. She is never afraid to try new things.  She has so many fashionable moments.

  1. Cher Horowitz
I personally think that the 90’s were a terrible decade for fashion. There were a lot of over-sized plaid shirts, baggy pants and let’s not forget the overalls! (I know we all wore them and that’s ok!) You couldn’t tell whether someone was a male or female from behind because they all dressed the same. But there is one fictional character I love that came from the 90’s and she is the one and only Cher Horowitz. Even though she had a computer to tell her if her outfits matched, she still had a sense for what was in style judging by the mini makeover she gave to Ms. Geist and her full-blown transformation of Tai.
I can remember playing dress up with my friends and we would try to channel Cher, wearing mini dressing, knee high tights and platform Mary Jane’s.

Fashion advice form Cher:
“I never trust a mirror, so I take Polaroid’s”
“Carpe Diem you looked hot! “

  1. Holly Golightly
We can’t leave out Holy Golightly! I think sometimes we forget that Audrey Hepburn and Holly are two totally different people! Holly always made sure she was put together whenever she left her house, whether she was going to Sing Sing, throwing a party or simply having breakfast at Tiffany’s.

So who are your fictional fashion icons?!

FASHION ICONS

We all have people we look up to and they say “ imitation is the sincerest form of flattery” so… here they are, my fashion icons. Both real and fictional

Coco Chanel
I love her because she started out making hats in a little shop and became one of the most well known designers. She oozes sophistication and class. She was a strong independent woman and always spoke her mind and has been quoted many times. It’s hard to choose just one quote but the one I’m about to share is how I try to live my life and is on of my favorites.

“ I don’t understand how a woman can leave the house without fixing herself    up a little, if only out of politeness.
And then, if you never know, maybe that’s the day she has a date with destiny.
And it’s the best to look as pretty as possible for destiny.”

I mean this quote says it all, but when I read this quote I had an epiphany. I realized that you only have so much control of what happens to you when you leave your house. So you might as well look somewhat decent when you leave because you never know whom you’ll run into.
I know that we are all guilty of leaving the house looking like we just rolled out of bed, and isn’t that always the time we run into an old boyfriend, our new crush or an old frenemy! So next time you leave the house looking like a frumpypotamus remember the words of CoCo Chanel.
Sorry about the tangent back to the icons

Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge ( Kate Middleton)
She is the young fresh new face of the English Monarchy.(and lets face it, with the queen not getting any younger, its about time they get someone in there that Diana would approve of) To me she is elegance! She always looks so put together and presents herself with such class. The thing I think I love the most is that she has been spotted shopping at everyday stores and is a bargain shopper, even though she is married to the future King of England and will one day be the Lady of the House at, the one and only, Buckingham Place. She seems so down to earth and this is what I love. She is the
       “peoples princess”

Kate Moss
She is the edgy cool girl you with your were friends with in high school. I know she has been in the press for not being very lady like and saying controversial things but lets face it she’s Kate Moss… she’s a freakin’ supermodel! At least she wasn’t spotted wearing an orange jump suit and picking up trash for assaulting her maid…Naomi Campbell

Audrey Hepburn
She is timeless! She is Holly Golightly, she made the LBD (little black dress) the LBD. She made skinny jeans cool. She made short hair sexy for women. She like CoCo has been quoted saying great things as well.

“ Beauty Tips
For beautiful eyes- look for the good in others
For beautiful lips- speak only words of kindness
And
For poise- walk with the knowledge that you are never alone.”

Rachel Zoe
The first time I hear of Rachel Zoe was in the tabloids… she was accused of being too skinny and that she had a strong influence on her clients of being “too skinny” as well. And then one day I happened to fall upon “The Rachel Zoe Project” on just about the best channel ever… Bravo. And that is when I decided I wanted her to be my friend. I went out and bought her book “ Style A to Zoe”, which is a great book. I highly recommend checking it out. The thing I love is that she has a great eye for fashion; she is the queen of accessories!

Well I think this post is long enough… well at least for me. So my fictional icons will have to wait until next time.

Who I Am

My name is Emily Brown and I just turned 25. I was born and raised in Mesa Arizona. Even though it was rated one of the most boring cities by Forb’s Magazine, I loved growing up there. After high school I moved to Provo, Utah and lived there for a year while attending beauty school. After I graduated moved home and started working at a salon.
I love to travel and see the culture of different places. I love hair and keeping up with new and current trends. Last but not least I love FASHION! I think growing up in a family of 5 girls you automatically have that girly sense drilled into you, and out of all 5 of us, my sisters would say, hands down, I have the best taste and they come to me for advice.  I love everything about fashion. I love to see your everyday outfit, to a fun night on the town to your exotic high fashion runway outfits.
Although I have never owned a piece of couture, high fashion brand name clothing doesn’t mean I don’t have a sense of fashion and doesn’t mean I won’t own a piece someday. I probably break some fashion rules that most experts would cringe in their seats if they knew what I did. But that’s the beauty of fashion! Some rules are meant to be broken. The way we dress is an expression of who we are. It’s a form of art, and if we all dressed the same, lets face it life would be pretty boring.
I want this blog to be an expression of who I am, I want it to inspire others to try new things and spark your imagination to think outside of the box. You’re probably thinking that this blog is just like every other “Fashion Amateur” blog out there and it might be to some. But this is something I have been wanting to do for a while and have let my fear of failure and being judged by others hold me back. I have let that fear hold me back too many times and have had a lot of missed opportunities and held me back of who I really am. So this is me!  I know I tried and that’s one less “ what might have been” I have in my life. Anyway, enough of my pity party, I just want you all to know I have a lot of ideas and hope you get some enjoyment out of reading.
